Telecom Egypt is Egypt’s main Telephone company. It started in 1854 with the first telegraph line in Egypt. In 1998, it replaced the former Arab Republic of Egypt National Telecommunication Organization (ARENTO). The company has a fixed line subscriber base in excess of 12 million subscribers, which makes it the largest fixed line provider in the Middle East and Africa. Telecom Egypt also owns 44% of Vodafone Egypt. In 2010, Telecom Egypt has been awarded the coveted GTM/EGX 2010 Best Investor Relations Award for excellence in its communications with international financial markets.
Ahmed El Beheiry was appointed as Managing Director and Chief Executive Office as of March 28, 2017. He has been a member of Telecom Egypt's Board of Directors since March 2016, representing the Egyptian government. El Beheiry started his career as a design engineer for mobile networks in Alcatel Egypt and contributed in the infrastructure construction for the first mobile network in Egypt during the period from 1995 to 1998. In July 1998, he joined Mobinil (currently Orange Egypt) as a Network Development Manager, assuming various positions till he served as the Networks & Roaming Director, prior to starting his own private business. In 2007, he founded Telecomax Group for Investment and Development that represents a group of companies operating in the fields of telecommunications and Information Technology services in Egypt, Africa and the Middle East. He also served as the group board Chairman till March 2016. In 2014, El Beheiry co-established "IDEA"; Investment for Development in Emerging Africa, a Company focusing on infrastructure, power and water projects development in Africa. He served as the company Managing Director till December 2015. El Beheiry has a number of researches contributing in the field of Mobile Communications Engineering that was published in the Telecom World Conference in California in 1997 and in the International Institute for Communications and Information Technology (IEEE) Magazine in May 2001. El Beheiry holds a Bachelor Science in Communications Engineering from the University of Alexandria in 1994, with an honors degree, and then he continued his theoretical studies to get a Master's degree in Mobile Communications Engineering in 1997 and a Master of Business Administration from the Arab Academy for Science and Technology in collaboration with the French University of Rennes.
