Harnessing ICTs to save lives: emergency
telecommunications in disaster management
ITU’s 2nd Global Forum on Emergency Telecommunications to convene
from 26-28 January in Kuwait City
Geneva, 19 January 2016 – Media
registration is open to all journalists who wish to cover ITU’s Second Global
Forum on Emergency Telecommunications (GET-2016).
Organized by
ITU,
the UN specialized agency for ICTs, the event is hosted by the Government of
Kuwait and
brings together
delegates from all over the world, ranging from government ministers to ICT
regulators, national disaster management stakeholders, experts from academia,
private sector leaders, United Nations entities and non-governmental
organizations.
The Forum provides an opportunity for policy makers and other participants to
debate and adopt concrete strategies on how information and communication
technologies can help implement the
Sendai Declaration and Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030,
achieve the
UN Sustainable Development Goals
and mitigate the effects of climate change in line with the
Paris Agreement,
adopted at UNFCCC climate conference in December 2015.
GET-2016
will feature a Ministerial Roundtable and a Leaders’ Dialogue as well as a
comprehensive programme of expert sessions over three days. A series of
pre-events will take place on 25 January.
Confirmed
government speakers include Sheikh
Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and
Acting Minister of Electricity and Water; Salim Alozainah, Chairman and CEO,
Communication and Information Technology Regulatory Authority; and Hameed H. Al-Qattan,
Undersecretary of the Ministry of Communications.
They join
ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao and Director of ITU’s Telecommunication
Development Bureau, Brahima Sanou, and a distinguished list of high-level
international speakers.
A series of exhibits will feature solutions and the effective use of ICT in
emergencies.
Journalists are encouraged to register now to attend all sessions of this global
event. Please note that for security reasons advance registration is
essential to obtain a badge to enter the venue.
