Big Conversations at ITU Telecom World 2012
BBC’s Nik Gowing to moderate live debate in Dubai
on the future of a communications industry in transformation
Dubai, UAE, 12 October 2012 – Experienced BBC broadcaster
and news presenter Nik Gowing will moderate a Big Conversation debate
at ITU Telecom World 2012 presenting contrasting perspectives from experienced
professionals on the shifting ecosystem, culture and values of the
communications sector today.
Taking place on Tuesday, 16 October at 09:00 AST (05:00 GMT) at ITU Telecom
World 2012, the leading global ICT community platform held this year in Dubai,
14 - 18 October, the Big Conversation will feature a small panel of
high-level authorities, including Klaus Leisinger, Chairman of Novartis
Foundation for Sustainable Development and Ali Jazairy, Head of Innovation at
the World Intellectual Property Organization.
The panellists will engage in live interactive conversation on the future of
the communications sector following the current period of radical disruption.
The emergence of new players offering services over-the-top (OTT) of existing
telecommunications operators has transformed the industry and sidelined both
traditional telcos and the social contract within which global telephony systems
were constructed.
Questions to be debated at the Big Conversation will include the
changing nature of attitudes towards privacy, security and the use of
intellectual property (IPR); the impact of new ICT business models; growing loss
of consumer trust in the industry; the dangers of concentrating too much power
in the hands of largely unaccountable entities; and the implications of a global
communications system evolving without a social dimension.
Audiences both onsite in Dubai and online around the world are encouraged to
participate actively in the debate via the live webstream, Twitter feed, email
and text, posing questions and providing comments that will have the power to
shape the direction of the Big Conversation.
“The Big Conversation in Dubai will engage key speakers and a global audience
via social media and multiple other channels," said ITU Secretary-General
Hamadoun I. Touré. " ITU Telecom World 2012 is the forum that provides this
unique opportunity for thought leaders in the communications and ICT sector to
move the conversation forward on the future of information and communication
technologies."
