| ITU as the leading organizing agency of
the Summit |
|
The original idea for a World Summit on the Information Society
came from ITU Resolution 73 (Minneapolis, 1998) adopted at the Plenipotentiary
Conference, which is the top policy making body of the Union.
In December 2001 the UN General Assembly passed Resolution
56/183, which invites ITU to assume the leading managerial role in the Executive
Secretariat of the Summit and its preparatory process.
