ITU & WSIS - Measuring progress

ITU analyses the telecommunication and ICTs sectors with the aim :

  • To assess the opportunities for possible financial mechanisms

  • To assess the impact of policy reforms and technical assistance

  • To better match the needs of countries and the available resources

  • To monitor WSIS implementation

  • Tracking global progress in the use of ICTs to achieve internationally agreed Development Goals

Providing ICTs indicators

The ITU’s Telecommunication Indicator Reports present an analysis of trends and developments in the global telecommunication and ICT sector. They include :

  • Global and regional reports

  • Free statistics on basic ICTs indicators by country, operator, region, gender

  • For more information

Developing a digital opportunity Index

The WSIS Geneva Plan of Action calls for a commitment to develop and launch a composite “ICT Development (Digital Opportunity) Index.

In cooperation with other UN specialized agencies, ITU is working on defining indicators to achieve the WSIS targets.

WSIS stocktaking

ITU has launched a stocktaking exercise with the aim to provide an inventory of existing and planned initiatives by all stakeholders. The stocktaking data-base is updated regularly. It provides a useful tool to illustrate how ICTs can help achieving the MDGs, monitor the implementation of the WSIS Plan of Action, and also identify domains where further actions are needed.

Building capacities

Through the "Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development" (UNCTAD/OECD/ITU/UIS/UN Regional commissions, UN ICT Task Force, World Bank), ITU is building capacities of National Statistical Offices in developing countries as well as competence to develop statistical compilation programs on the Information Society.
