Summary:

In a network with many entities, and especially in an environment with little human intervention, there is a requirement for automated procedures for establishing and maintaining the PKI, such as public-key certificates, private keys, trust anchor information, etc. In addition, there is a requirement to distribute software updates as new threats are identified and resolved.
