Network of Women for WRC-19 (#NOW4WRC19)

​A gender declaration on Promoting Gender Equality, Equity and Parity in the ITU Radiocommunication Sector has been adopted at WRC-19. WRC recognizes need to accelerate efforts towards gender equality, equity and parity in ITU community. The mentorship programme for WRC-19 participants

The mentorship programme that has started at the CPM19-2 meeting in Geneva, will reopen at the WRC19 conference to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt in October 2019. In this edition, the focus will be on the technical topics and processes in relation to the WRC-19 Agenda items. This programme will cover the period of WRC-19 and continues afterwards in preparation for WRC-23.

What is NOW4WRC19?

The intent of the NOW4WRC19 initiative is to start building capacity early on in the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) process in order to encourage a larger participation of women as delegates, chairs, vice-chairs, etc., at WRC-19. Its main objectives are:

  • Gender balance among delegates
  • Prepare women delegates in key roles for WRC-19
  • Grow the ITU women’s community capacity and contribution      

The Network of Women for WRC-19 initiative was launched December 2016 during WRS-16​. For more details please see HERE.

Recent activities

  • ITU-R Study Group Meetings
    • ​During 2018 several sessions and mentorship programmes cycles were organized in the context of Working Party 4A, in February 2018 and in July 2018 at Geneva link; and in the context of Task Group 5/1 meetings, in January, May and August 2018 at Geneva -- link. Further in this context, a social event was organized at the CERN site in collaboration with the CERN women group. Photos from CERN Visit
    • ​During 2017 several sessions and mentorship programmes cycles were organized in the context of Working Party 4A, in May 2017 at Geneva; and in the context of Task Group 5/1 meetings, at Abu Dhabi in September 2017, at Geneva in May 2017 -- link.
  • WRC-19 Regional Preparatory Meetings
    • Introductory session were organized during WRC-19 regional preparatory group meetings : “The 23rd Arab Spectrum Management Group (ASMG) meeting” (Marrakech, Morocco, April 2018). The 1st NOW session in a regional group meeting, co-organized by ITU, the ASMG group and the host agency ANRT(Agence Nationale de Réglementation des Télécommunications) Morocco. HACA (High Authority for Audio-visual
      Communication) Morocco participate and contribute to this session. link
    • Introductory session were organized during WRC-19 regional preparatory group meetings : “The 2nd meeting of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) WRC-19 Preparatory Working Groups” (Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, June 2018).
  • ITU Regional Radiocommunication Seminar (RRS-Arab) in Oman
    • Introductory session were organized during RRS-Arab-17 in December 2017 in Oman: sharing information, experiences and pieces of advice between participants focusing on the work and WRC preparatory process in Arab regions.

  • Other related activities
    • The Network of Women for WRC-19 (NOW) initiative was launched by François Rancy, Director of ITU's Radiocommunication Bureau, during the 2016 World Radiocommunication Seminar (WRS-16)  in Geneva from 12 to 16 December 2016.
    •  The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) organized a mentorship program at the session of the ITU Council May 25-June 2, 2016 in Geneva ​ link
    • The WeLead mentoring programme  launched by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)  at the WRC-15 November 2015 in Geneva ​​link
    • Empowering Women in Radiocommunications Negotiations -  Leadership Workshop for delegates attending the RA and WRC-15,  1 November 2015 at ITU HQ, Geneva organized by ITU and UNITAR link​ ​

  • Friday - February 22, 17:30 - 18:00 - Second Session of Network of Women for WRC-19, a side event of CPM19-2 meeting (Lobby 2, CCV)
  • Tuesday - February 19, 17:00-17:30 - Introductory Session of Network of Women for WRC-19, a side event of CPM19-2 meeting (Room 5+6, CICG).
  •  ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Wednesday – February 13 – Launch of a new mentorship programme within the Network of Women for WRC-19 (NOW4WRC19) open to participants of the ​CPM19-2 meeting in Geneva.

The mentorship programme opened at the CPM19-2 meeting at ITU in Geneva in February 2019. In this edition, the focus will be on the technical topics and processes in relation to the WRC-19 Agenda items. This programme has started at the CPM19-2 and continues until and during WRC-19 (See above).
