ITU Secretary-General visited Cambodia and Thailand to take part in a number of high-level activities and meet with top politicians, including Thailand’s Prime Minister H.E. Yingluck Shinawatra.
Dr Touré took pleasure in joining Brahima Sanou, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, for the Asia-Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the ITU World Telecommunication Development Conference, which will be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt in 2014.
Dr Touré then travelled to Thailand to speak at a special event held by the Thai National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, where he emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in Asia’s fast-growing digital markets. "As Thailand meets its connectivity targets, it also needs to make sure that it keeps the Internet safe and secure. The most recent statistics suggest that losses of over 100 billion dollars annually are being caused by cybercrime, and that some 550 million people are being targeted by cyberattacks every year," he said.
While visiting Bangkok, Dr Touré also took the opportunity to sign the agreement for the forthcoming ITU Telecom event, which will take place from 19-22 November 2013.
