ITU Secretary-General Dr Hamadoun I. Touré made a high-level visit to the Republic of Albania to meet with top members of the government, including Prime Minister Sali Berisha, Minister for Innovation and ICT Genc Pollo, and Mr Sejdi Qerimaj, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva. The occasion was the Regional Forum for Europe on the theme of “Broadband: A Pillar of Social and Economic Development.”

Dr Touré highlighted the extraordinary and rapid adoption of ICT in Albania over the past decade. Mobile penetration has surpassed 100 per cent, he noted, and more than the half of the population is online. ’’Broadband is a set of transformative technologies, which are fundamentally changing the way we live – and which can help ensure sustainable social and economic growth, not just in the rich world, but in every country, rich and poor, developed and developing,’’ said Dr Touré.

The meeting also featured the signing of an important new partnership deal between the Republic of Albania and Intel’s World Ahead programme, comprising project funding and in-kind contributions.
