I was delighted to welcome the first eight academic institutions officially admitted to participate in ITU Sector activities, at a special ceremony held last Friday. Our new participants  include three institutions from Tunisia; two from China; and one each from Algeria, Denmark and Japan.

The involvement of academia brings a fresh new voice to the work of our three Sectors. These institutions are the seed-beds that nurture the rising stars of tomorrow’s ICT industry, be they engineers or business leaders, and their unique perspective will help us remain at the forefront of the industry we serve.

To promote the benefits of ITU participation, I was also honoured that two distinguished academics, Professor Mellor of the United Kingdom Telecommunications Academy (UKTA), and Professor Obi of Waseda University, Japan, agreed to serve as ITU’s new Special Envoys for Academia.
