ITU Telecom World kicks off in Busan, Korea: ITU Telecom World got off to a roaring start on Monday with a powerful opening ceremony and a series of sessions on how artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G can help drive the 4th Industrial Revolution. More than 5,250 people registered and 500+ exhibitors from emerging and developed markets representing 131 countries are bringing with them the smartest ideas for smart digital transformation.

Linking AI, Banking and Smart Cities:  As Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to transform all industries, the Smart ABC Programme at ITU Telecom World focuses on the latest technical developments at the intersection of three key emerging smart sectors: AI, Banking and Smart Cities. Will autonomous AI disrupt banking before it disrupts driving? Toufi Saliba says it already has.

Tech Startups in Emerging Markets: Investors at ITU Telecom World are sharing their top tips for tech startups in emerging markets. Meanwhile, entrepreneurs are pitching their startups to judges. Winners of the 2017 Telecom World Awards will be announced on September 28! See how the award helped propel one of last year's winners, ulalaLAB, as they seek to provide innovative, 'Industry 4.0' solutions for manufacturers.

VR/AR: KT, a leading Korean telco, is using virtual reality simulations to lead the way to the future. And the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang is being celebrated with the theme: Passion, Connected and is using the latest VR technologies to allow participants to experience the rush of the games in 360 degrees from the safety of their homes.

Academic Partnerships: The new ITU Journal, called ICT Discoveries was just launched at ITU Telecom World. The first issue will forecast how AI will improve user experience by enhancing the performance and efficiency of communications networks. And GSMA has partnered with Yonsei University Graduate School of Information to train tomorrow’s policymakers and regulators.

  • Smart City, Busan: The city of Busan is a pioneering smart city using IoT-led solutions and technologies for community safety, traffic improvement, urban living, energy conservation, and more. Government ministers attending ITU Telecom World participated in a Smart City Tour and were welcomed by the Vice Mayor of Busan over the weekend.
  • 5G: Over twenty CTOs and industry executives met in Korea in advance of ITU Telecom World to discuss how AI will shape 5G network standards.
