 Broadband: A '4-Way Win'

The few countries that have developed and implemented a national broadband vision have already seen enormous benefits. Other forward-looking nations have recognized the critical important of broadband to their future social and economic prosperity.

Without ICTs, governments won’t solve the problems of getting health care to isolated or ageing populations, or solve tomorrow’s pressing educational and environmental challenges. So broadband needs to move off the telecoms agenda and on to the national agenda.

Governments – and their citizens – will ultimately be the long-term financial beneficiary of national broadband networks, while equipment manufacturers will realize significant returns that will help spur further technological innovation.

For operators, it’s clear that no national broadband network can be economically viable without developing assured demand. As much as 50% of traffic on national broadband networks will be directly or indirectly government-related.

ITU’s Build on Broadband initiative to create national broadband networks makes for a ‘4-Way Win’:

  • Governments realize substantial savings in service delivery.

  • Citizens enjoy better access to, and cheaper, government services.

  • Equipment manufacturers gain access to major sales opportunities.

  • Operators and service providers get guaranteed traffic volumes – with the promise of strong future growth as more and more services go digital.

Far-sighted leaders will act now to ensure they are equipped to meet the many challenges ahead in areas like health care delivery, climate change, tax recovery, border control and transport management.
