Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) Objectives

  • Preparatory work has been initiated for the next WTDC, to be held towards the end of 2017. The organization of the RPMs is going well, and the provisional dates have been agreed.
  • TDAG held its 20th meeting in April 2015, and reviewed PP-14 outcomes and resolutions and their implications for the work of ITU-D, as well as the implementation of the ITU-D Strategic Plan and Operational Plan for 2014, including WTDC-14 resolutions and regional initiatives.
  • The two ITU-D Study Groups held their second meetings for the 2014-17 study period in September 2015 to progress the work items agreed by WTDC-14.
  • The Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) and its pre-events held in Gabon (9 to 11 June 2015) welcomed around 400 senior international policy-makers from over 60 countries.
  • Many trainings and workshops were organized and direct assistance was provided to a number of members.
  • Innovation and partnership were promoted, and 41 new partnership agreements were signed in 2015. Sixteen new ITU-D Sector Members and two Associates joined during this period. Some 32 centres of excellence signed Cooperation Agreements with ITU.
  • The 13th World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS) took place in Hiroshima (Japan), from 30 November to 2 December 2015. The event was attended by around 600 participants from 88 countries. During WTIS-15, the “Measuring the Information Society Report 2015” was launched.
  • Over 350 ITU Members benefited from training on ICT accessibility policies and practices.
  • As part of the Concentrated Assistance programme, several countries benefited from direct assistance from ITU-D in 2015.
  • ITU-D enhanced the ability of Member States to save lives when disaster strikes through deploying emergency telecommunication equipment in a number of cases in 2015.​
