Session 1: Welcome

Objectives: The Global Standards Symposium (GSS) was adopted by the ITU Plenipotentiary (by Resolution 122, Antalya 2006) as a one-day round table and coordination meeting, to serve as a forum for high-level policy discussion and to provide its conclusions to the WTSA.

Session 2: Bridging the standardization gap: from innovation to standards

Moderator: Mr Gift Buthelezi, DDG: ICT International Affairs and Trade, Department of Communications, South Africa

Objectives: Interoperable standards provide a solid foundation on which innovation can take place to develop new, smarter solutions. The market size of developing countries provides unique opportunities for leveraging network effects to drive innovation. Thus, developing countries are expected to play an increasingly important role in ICT innovation. Standardization that is lively and strong has the power to accelerate the access of innovation to both domestic and global market. Global standards can thus provide an enabling platform to sustain ICT innovations.

Session 3: Global Standards Challenges

Moderator: Mr Hatem BAMATRAF, EVP Network Development, Du

Objectives: This session looks at future challenges for the standards-making community and the role of ITU-T in the global standardization landscape. The presentations will also deal with issues on M2M, e-health, smart grid, intelligent transportation systems, and resilience of networks to disasters. Speakers in this session include executives from industry.

Session 4: Global Standards Collaboration Roundtable

Moderator: Dr Bruce GRACIE, Chairman, ITU-T Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group (TSAG)

Objectives: The business of standards-making is becoming increasingly complex and costly, and SDOs must form partnerships and work collaboratively. In this session, which takes the form of a roundtable discussion, senior figures from the standards-making community will debate the issues of the day and demonstrate how their organisation is addressing the challenges of collaboration in an intersecting world of ICT and the verticals discussed in Session 3.

Session 5: Adoption of GSS report and closing

Objectives:
The objective of the final session is to adopt the conclusions of the GSS that will include recommendations for action by the membership. The report on conclusions, which will be prepared by the GSS steering committee, will be presented to WTSA-12 for appropriate action.
