Marcelo Sampaio de Alencar

Alencar.jpgDr. Marcelo Sampaio de Alencar received his Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering, from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil, 1980, his Master Degree in Electrical Engineering, from Universidade Federal da Paraiba (UFPB), Brazil, 1988 and his Ph.D. from University of Waterloo, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Canada, 1993. Marcelo S. Alencar has 34 years of engineering experience, and 24 years as an IEEE Member, currently as Senior Member. For 18 years he worked for the Department of Electrical Engineering, Federal University of Paraiba, where he was Full Professor and supervised more than 60 graduate and several undergraduate students. Since 2003, he is Chair Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Federal University of Campina Grande, Brazil. Between 1982 and 1984, he worked for the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC). He spent some time working for MCI-Embratel and University of Toronto, as Visiting Professor.

He is founder and President of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Communications (Iecom). He has been awarded several scholarships and grants, including three scholarships and several research grants from the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CNPq), two grants from the IEEE Foundation, a scholarship from the University of Waterloo, a scholarship from the Federal University of Paraiba, an achievement award for contributions to the Brazilian Telecommunications Society (SBrT), an award from the Medicine College of the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG) and an achievement award from the College of Engineering of the Federal University of Pernambuco, during its 110th year celebration.

He published over 350 engineering and scientific papers and fifteen books. He also wrote several chapters for ten books.

He was general chair of the The 13th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications (WPMC'10).  He was Co-Chair, International Program Committee, The Second International Conference on Mobile Ubiquitous Computing, Systems, Services, and Technologies (UBICOMM 2008). He was vice-chair of the The 9th IEEE International Symposium on Spread Spectrum Techniques and Applications (ISSSTA 2006) and member of the International Program Committee of the The Second International Conference on Mobile Ubiquitous Computing, Systems, Services, and Technologies (UBICOMM 2008).  Member of the Organizing Committee and South and Central America Liaison for the 2004 IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications.  He was co-chair of the XV Simpósio Brasileiro de Telecomunicações, in 1997, and of the 2008 IEEE Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC 2008).  He was member of the Organizing Committee of the VI Simpósio Brasileiro de Telecomunicações, in 1988, member of the International Advisory Committee do International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC'95), of the 12th International Conference on Telecomunicações (ICT 2005), member of the Technical Program Committee of the Global Communications Conference (Globecom'99) and of several editions of the Simpósio Brasileiro de Telecomunicações.​
