Supplement 2 to ITU-T T-series
Recommendations is technically aligned with ISO/IEC TR 29199-1 but is not
published as identical text. It was drafted in collaboration with ISO/IEC
JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1 (which is informally known as
 "JPEG").

This Supplement provides a technical
overview and informative guidelines for applications of the JPEG XR
image coding system as normatively specified in Recommendation ITU-T
 T.832 | ISO/IEC 29199-2, Recommendation ITU-T
 T.833 | ISO/IEC 29199-3, Recommendation ITU-T
 T.834 | ISO/IEC 29199-4, and Recommendation
 ITU-T T.835 | ISO/IEC 29199-5. The overview of
JPEG XR coding technology includes a description of the supported image
formats, the internal data processing hierarchy and data structures, the
image tiling design supporting hard and soft tiling of images, the lapped
bi-orthogonal transform, supported quantization modes, adaptive coding and
scanning of coefficients, entropy coding, and finally the codestream
structure. This overview provides a basic understanding of how a JPEG XR
encoder works and the various modes it supports. It also compares the
JPEG XR design with those of baseline JPEG (Recommendation ITU-T T.81 |
 ISO/IEC 10918-1) and JPEG 2000 (Recommendation ITU-T T.800 |
ISO/IEC 15444-1). Following the overview is a discussion of the use of
JPEG XR for high dynamic range (HDR) image coding. Clause 8 reviews
various JPEG XR profiles and describes their target applications. Clause
9, encoding practices, provides general encoding guidelines and guidelines
for encoding for providing random access functionality, including an analysis
of tile size selection trade-offs. A decoding process functionality, clause
10, describes the decoding process and output colour conversions, and
describes how to make use of JPEG XR scalability features in a decoding
application. These scalability features include resolution, quality and
spatial random access scalabilities. Finally, clause 11 describes codestream
manipulations in the compressed domain. This clause describes methods for
trimming a codestream to extract a smaller codestream, switching between
spatial and frequency codestream modes, rotation and flipping of images,
extraction of a region of interest in the compressed domain, switching
between interleaved and planar alpha planes, and modifying the tile structure
of an image. This Supplement is intended to help application developers to
understand the JPEG XR design and to provide assistance in making
 effective use of its capabilities.

In order to show the text region segment with

decodability by the current decoder. A total of 32 colours are defined
by default in this amendment. An additional colour dictionary can be defined

Recommendation ITU-T T.809 | ISO/IEC
15444-10 is a work item subdivision of ISO/IEC 15444 that provides extensions
 of Recommendation ITU‑T T.800 | ISO/IEC 15444-1 and Recommendation ITU-T
T.801 | ISO/IEC 15444-2 for logically cuboidal data sets. In particular, it
respects all existing capabilities and syntax of Recommendation ITU‑T T.800

ISO/IEC 15444-2 for multi-component images, while providing alternatives
and extensions to some of those capabilities. Within these constraints, it

the project provides identical processing capabilities in all three
 dimensions even though Recommendation ITU‑T T.800 |
 ISO/IEC 15444-1 and Recommendation ITU-T T.801 | ISO/IEC 15444-2
codestream syntax differentiates between the two spatial axes and the
cross-component axis. The context models currently used in this
Recommendation | International Standard are as in Recommendation ITU-T T.800

Improved context models will be introduced through an amendment.

Corrigendum 1 (05/2011, integrated in
this new edition) corrects a number of minor mistakes that were present in
various formulae of Annex B. It also provides a more formal and unambiguous
description on the mandatory use of the CAP marker segment in the codestream,
in order to enhance interoperability with the other parts of the JPEG 2000
standard. Furthermore, it introduces a new annex on how quantization should

 name=isume>Summary

Recommendation ITU-T T.833 is technically aligned with
ISO/IEC 29199-3 but is not published as identical text. It was drafted in
collaboration with ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1 (which is informally known as
 "JPEG").

This Recommendation | International Standard is the Motion
JPEG XR file format specification. The Motion JPEG XR file format is designed
to contain one or more motion sequences of JPEG XR images, with their timing.
The format is based on the ISO base media file format. It is intended as a
'building block', specifying only the video format. An application would be
expected to combine Motion JPEG XR with suitable audio, metadata, etc., for a
complete application specification; that specification would normally select
profiles and levels of Motion JPEG XR, and could also specify application
profiles and levels that apply to the integration.

Motion JPEG XR is expected to be used in a variety of
applications, particularly where JPEG XR image coding technology is already
available for other reasons, or where the high-quality frame-based approach,
with no inter-frame coding, is appropriate.

Motion JPEG XR is a flexible format, permitting a wide
variety of usages, such as editing, display interchange, and streaming.

This Amendment adds guidelines to ITU-T T.800
| ISO/IEC 15444-1 for the usage of JPEG 2000 in the framework of digital cinema
applications. Three topics are addressed in these guidelines.

The first is dedicated to reliable
multicast transmission of JPEG 2000 codestreams because Digital Cinema content
may be delivered to the theatres by using several communication channels, and
many of them can be wireless, such as DVB-T, DVB-S, and WiMAX.

The second topic is related to
implementation guidelines for Digital Cinema distribution. One of the
guidelines provides quantization steps for 2K visually lossless compression
based on perceptual thresholds. Also included are visual weightings for digital
cinema conditions, which improve the quality of the JPEG 2000 DCinema profiles.
The third topic gives practical rules for using JPEG 2000 in motion
picture archives.

ITU-T Recommendation T.809 | ISO/IEC
15444-10 is a work item subdivision of ISO/IEC 15444 that provides extensions
of ITU‑T Recommendation T.800 | ISO/IEC 15444-1 and ITU-T
Recommendation T.801 | ISO/IEC 15444-2 for logically cuboidal data sets. In
particular, it respects all existing capabilities and syntax of ITU‑T Recommendation T.800
| ISO/IEC 15444-1 and part of the existing capabilities of ITU-T
Recommendation T.801 | ISO/IEC 15444-2 for multi-component
images, while providing alternatives and extensions to some of those
capabilities. Within these constraints, it provides an isotropic specification
for three-dimensional data sets; i.e., the project provides identical
processing capabilities in all three dimensions even though ITU‑T
Recommendation T.800 | ISO/IEC 15444-1 and ITU-T Recommendation T.801
| ISO/IEC 15444-2 codestream syntax differentiates between the two spatial axes
and the cross-component axis. The context models currently used in this
Recommendation | International Standard are as in ITU-T Recommendation T.800 |
ISO/IEC 15444-1 and ITU-T Recommendation T.801 | ISO/IEC 15444-2. Improved
context models will be introduced through an amendment.

Corrigendum 1 (2011/05, integrated in this
new edition) corrects a number of minor mistakes that were present in various
formulas of Annex B. It also provides a more formal and unambiguous description

It also provides a more formal and unambiguous description
on the mandatory use of the CAP marker segment in the codestream, in order to
enhance interoperability with the other parts of the JPEG 2000 standard.
Furthermore, it introduced new Annex E on how quantization should be handled
for JP3D images.

Summary

Recommendation ITU-T T.832 specifies a
coded image format, referred to as JPEG XR, which is designed primarily for
storage and interchange of continuous-tone photographic content. The main body
of the text specifies the syntax and semantics of JPEG XR coded images and the
associated decoding process. Annex A specifies a tag-based file storage format
for storage and interchange of such coded images. Annex B specifies profiles
and levels, which determine conformance requirements for classes of encoders
and decoders. Aspects of color imagery representations and color management are
discussed in Annex C. The typical expected encoding process is described in
Annex D.

Corrigendum 1 to the 2009
edition of Recommendation ITU-T T.832 (approved 12/2009) contained a set of various
minor corrections.

Corrigendum 2 contains
additional minor corrections approved 05/2011.

The text was developed as a twin text
Recommendation corresponding to ISO/IEC 29199-2 in collaboration with ISO/IEC
JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1 (JPEG).

(2005) | ISO/IEC 15444-9:2005 defines the framework, concepts and methodology
for establishing JPIP interoperability and the criteria to be achieved to
 claim compliance to Recommendation ITU-T T.808 | ISO/IEC 15444-9. This
amendment defines JPIP profiles and variants. Profiles define
the fields that a JPIP server is expected to implement and support beyond
parsing and interpretation; profiles also limit the requests a client can
expect a server within this profile to support and fully implement. Variants
define which features of the JPIP standard are used to request and transmit
data between client and server. Servers are classified according to the
highest level profile they support, and all the variants they implement.
Clients are classified according to all the variants they implement, and
according to the highest level profile they support. A new annex is also

ISO/IEC 15444-1 specifies profiles for video broadcast applications. These
profiles enable use of the wavelet-based JPEG 2000 codec for the coding and
display of timed sequences of images. Such sequences of images are referred
to as video. In changes to Annex A, the profiles and levels for video
broadcast applications are defined and the associated constraints are
specified. A new Annex M is added to specify an elementary stream format for
carriage of JPEG 2000 encoded video for broadcast applications.

This amendment was developed as common
text in collaboration with ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/‌WG 1. As of the approval
of this amendment, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 was also preparing Rec.
 ITU-T T.800 (2002) | ISO/IEC 15444-1:2004 Amd.3, which had not
progressed to FDAM stage; therefore, it could not yet be considered for
approval by ITU. Since this amendment on "Profiles for broadcast

was kept as for the ITU-T approval process purposes also numbered as
Amendment 4, even though Amendment 3 was neither approved or yet
available for consideration under AAP. After approval, in order to keep

Amendment 1 to ITU-T T.802 (2005) |
ISO/IEC 15444-3:2007 introduces additional profiles for archiving
applications that define preservation and access profiles for moving pictures
within the Motion JPEG 2000 file format.

In the new parts of Annex A, profiles are
defined, audio formats and image code stream profiles for archival purposes
(with code stream profile indicator 5 to 7) are referenced and constraints
 are set.

In the new parts of Annex B, guidelines
are given for ingesting content into cinematic archives, for disseminating of
content from cinematic archives, for the exchange of content between
archives, for the use of the MXF file format in archives and for general
 procedures to manage archives.
