At the Plenipotentiary Conference, the fundamental role of
ITU in providing a global perspective in regard to the information
society was recognized by Member States, which also stressed the importance
of ITU as an active and relevant contributor to the WSIS process (Res.
PLEN/7).
The Plenipotentiary Conference invited the Council Working
Group on WSIS to see to it that ITU makes a contribution to the second meeting
of WSIS PrepCom in February 2003 comprising proposals for ITU
substantive input, including to the WSIS declaration of principles and
action plan (Dec.
PLEN/1).
The Working Group held its first
meeting on 21 September 2002 and adopted a report that was submitted to the last
meeting of the 2002 Council in Marrakesh.
The Council noted the Working Group Chairman's report and
requested that it be presented to the ITU Plenipotentiary
Conference (Marrakesh,
2002) and serve as a basis for an in-depth discussion on ITU's substantive
contribution to WSIS.
