The Internet in South East Asia
Bangkok, Thailand 21-23 November 2001

Information Note

1. Venue and Duration
The Internet in South East Asia on the diffusion of the Internet in the South East Asian region will be held at the  ARNOMA HOTEL Bangkok, Thailand, during 21-23 November 2001 (See Hotel information for address, telephone number and map).

2. Registration
The Registration Counter will be set up in the foyer of the Arnoma II room, 3rd Floor. All delegates are strongly urged to pre-register by completing and sending the registration form back to the ITU in advance of the workshop. Pre-registration (distribution of badges and documentation) will take place on Wednesday, 21st of November, 2001, at 8:00 am.

3. Reception at Airport
For your general information, the following means of transportation are available from Don Muang International Airport to the Hotel:

  • Public Taxi: Taxis whith and without meters are available at the authorized public taxi stands in the arrival hall of the airport. Taxi drivers are only permitted to pick up passengers at these authorized stands.
  • Airport Limousine Service: The Don Muang International Airport has a limousine service to various destinations in the city. The "Limousine Counter" is located at the arrival floor of the airport.
  • Hotel Limousine Service: The hotel will provide a Limousine Service at the rate of 800 Baht (airport - hotel).

4. Hotel accomodation
The PTD secretariat has arranged a special rate at the ARNOMA HOTEL for all participants and prices during the workshop are as follows: 

  • Single room 2'500 Bath nett
  • Double room 3'000 Bath nett

** The above room rate is inclusive of American Breakfast, lunch, 10% Service Charge and Government Tax

5. Credit Cards
Major international credit cards such as American Express, Diner Club, Master Card and VISA as well as traveller's Cheques are accepted in most shops, restaurants and hotels. Automatic Teller Mechines (ATMs) are situated outside most banks in towns and cities and operate 24 hours a day.

6. Working hours
The workshop will take place from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (17:00) on Wednesday (21 November) and Thursday (22 November) and from 9:00 am to noon on Friday (23 November). The meeting will adjourn at noon on Friday, 23 November. There will be two coffee/tea breaks and a break for lunch on Wednesday and Thursday and one coffee/tea break on Friday.

7. Language
The meeting and all documentation will be in English.

8. Documentation
Documentation will be posted on the workshop web site as received. All participants are encouraged to download the documents from the web site and bring it with them to the workshop as extra copies will be limited.

9. Business and shopping hours
Most businesses and shops are open Monday - Saturday 09:00 am - 8:00 pm (20:00). Most department stores are open everyday from 10:00 am - 9:00 pm (21:00). Banks are open Monday - Friday 09:30 am - 03:30 pm (15:30). Restaurants and tourist attractions are open every day.

10. Immigration Requirements
Passport holders from many countries do not require visas to enter Thailand. We strongly advise you to contact your local office of the diplomatic or consular representative of the Thai Government to ensure that you have all required travel documents to enter Thailand. 11. Foreign Exchange Rate
The Foreign Exchange Rate as of 1st of October 2001 is about 44.70 / 1 US$.

12. VAT (Value Added Tax)
Currently set at 7%, VAT is included in the marked/quoted price of most goods and services.

13. Weather
Thailand has a tropical climate with three distinct seasons: Hot (March-May), Rainy (June-October) and Cool (November-February). Average temperatures are around 27° Celcius.

14. Airport Tax
An Airport Tax of Baht 500 is to be paid at the time of departure.

15. Local time
GTM + 7 hours.

16. Electrical Current
200 Volt, 50Hz.

17. Telecommunications Services
Thailand has a sophisticated telecommunication network, with adequate coin and card operated public telephones. Internet Cafés are widely available.
