HOT TOPICS ON THE AGENDA AT THE ITU TELECOM WORLD 2006 FORUM
The Forum at WORLD provided the chance to discover how, what, when and why the latest ICTs are affecting our lives. Some of the key themes which will be widely explored at the Forum include:

  • Digital Content: The quest to provide innovative digital content for ever more content-hungry consumers has brought together a whole new set of players. From broadcasters or record labels to hardware and software producers or credit card providers, all have a stake in the digital content industry. But what are the greatest opportunities offered by this burgeoning industry? And what are the pitfalls for prospective new market entrants? Click here to read more on this fast-growing market segment.

  • Digital Home: The Digital Home of the Future is likely to have access to the world’s largest library, the largest movie collection and a complete range of sporting events, all delivered over a broadband IP-based network, plus a whole host of complex computing and communications devices which will monitor and modify the surrounding environment accordingly. But how can this truly be transformed into reality? And what challenges need to be addressed on the way? Find out more here.

  • Multiple Play: Multiple play services are becoming increasingly widely available, although there remain a whole host of issues surrounding them that need to be addressed, from pricing to regulation or content delivery. Click here to read more on Multiple Play.

  • Ubiquitous Networks:  A society where information can be accessed from anywhere, at anytime, by anyone and anything. Through a raft of new technologies this is now becoming a reality. Click here to read more about ubiquitous networks, and some of the challenges surrounding them.

  • The China and Hong Kong, SAR ICT markets: With 744 million total telephone subscribers in 2005, according to ITU, China is the world’s biggest market. China’s level of investment in ICTs has exceeded 2% of annual GDP since the 1990’s. Hong Kong, meanwhile, has one of the most competitive mobile markets in the world, with a mobile penetration of over 122% in 2005, as well as a highly developed broadband market. The size and strategic importance of these East Asian economies make them vital testing grounds for the introduction of new technologies. Click here to read more on these dynamic markets.

  • Reaching the Next Billion Users: Today there are more phone users (predominantly users of mobile) in Africa than in the entire population of Japan. Although there are still many who do not have access to telephony, the digital divide is showing signs of shrinking. Click here to read more.
