Abstract 

Session 5 - Current Status of Mobile Satellite Services in Japan and Next Stage

Abstract

The presentation includes the current Mobile Satellite Services deployed by NTT DoCoMo in Japan from 1996. NTT DoCoMo has been offering satellite mobile communications services using S-Band of N-STAR Satellites. These services cover all over Japan national boundary including the Maritime communications.

The subscriber number is now approximately 30 thousand. The half subscribers are used for the maritime usage, and the rest are on the terrestrial usage mainly for the communication tools in case of the disaster and other purposes where terrestrial mobile services don’t cover.

The services consist of telephone and data communications services for 4.8kb/s both way using Circuit switch NW, and Packet communications service for 64kb/s(for NW to Terminals Direction) and 4.8kb/s(for Terminals to NW direction).

It is shown that the current status of satellite mobile communications services mentioned above, as well as how the subscriber use these services efficiently. And further I will explain the future plans for the next stage mobile satellite services using higher performance satellites.

Biography

Kunihiro Hayashi joined NTT in 1979, and was engaged in development on satellite communications systems and networks, control schemes, etc. Since 2000, he worked for NTT DoCoMo, and in the Satellite Business Section planning for mobile communications services using the geostationary satellites.
