Abstract
Session 3: IP over Satellite: Standardization Activities in ETSI TC-SES
Speaker: Mr. Rupert Goodings, Ecotel Ltd
Vice-chairman of TC-SES
Chairman of TC-SES/BSM WG
Abstract
This presentation gives an overview of the IP and Multimedia related standardization activities in
the ETSI Technical Committee Satellite Earth Stations and Systems (TC-SES), with a particular focus
on the work of the Broadband Satellite Multimedia Working Group (BSM WG) and the ETSI Special Task
Force STF-214.
The presentation gives a brief introduction to TC-SES and to the BSM WG, including a reminder of the
background work of the earlier ETSI Special Task Force STF-126: the phase 2 report from STF-126 was
the main trigger for the formation of the BSM WG.
This is followed by an overview of two BSM Technical Reports ("Services and Architectures" and "IP over Satellite")
that have recently been published by ETSI, showing how these reports are being used as the framework for a series
of more detailed technical reports on specific IP-over-satellite issues.
Looking ahead, the BSM WG are planning to complete the first of these detailed technical reports later this year
and then plan to use these detailed technical reports to start work on a set of new technical specifications.
We expect that some of this work will be assisted by a new STF. The BSM WG are also working on a first set of
air interface specifications for a Regenerative Satellite Mesh architecture (RSM-A).
The presentation closes with a summary of the current activities of the BSM WG, giving details of the ongoing
liaisons and co-operations and details of the work items planned for 2003.
