For the third year running, a major event focusing on information and communication technologies (ICT) in motor vehicles was organized by
ITU1,
ISO2 and
IEC3, working
together as the World Standards Cooperation (WSC). Taking place at one of the world’s leading automotive events,
the Geneva International Motor Show, The Fully Networked Car took place between 5 and 7 March 2008.

This year’s event featured a keynote speech from Max Mosley,
president of the FIA (Fédération Internationale de
l’Automobile which is also the organizer of the Formula One
World Championship).
As in previous years, the event brought together key
specialists in the field, from top decision-makers to
engineers, designers, planners, government officials,
regulators, standards experts and others.
ICT in vehicles represents a significant value-add for
consumers in terms of safety, comfort and mobility.
Stakeholders agree that standardization is key to the
development of new technologies and that coordination
between the traditionally remote vehicle manufacturing and ICT industries is crucial.
Presentations concentrated on some of the complex and
fascinating questions facing the industries. For example:
What are the right business models in linking the automotive
and telecoms sectors? What are the legal and policy
constraints? How do we face the technical and engineering
challenges? How de we make sure that the right standards are
adopted to deal with the complexity of so many electronic
components and to allow this market to develop its full
potential? What about environmental aspects? These and many
other issues were discussed. The workshop addressed
questions such as these, established a constructive dialogue
among all the stakeholders and reached a better
understanding between the ICT and automotive sectors and to
combine efforts and skills to create standards for the
benefit of all. The event brought interested parties
together from around the world to promote innovation and
ensure that in-car communication technology moves forward at
a rapid pace.
Demonstration area
The exhibition area was centred around the Honda Racing F1 Team's new 2008 F1 “Earthdreams car” to give special emphasis to the environmental theme of the event.
