Workshop on Standardization in E-Health |
Geneva, 23-25 May 2003
Abstract
ITU Telemedicine Expert Training Course
Hosted by Tokai University
There are now over 100 developing countries having already conducted some kinds of telemedicine projects. However,
despite the recent improvement in hardware and the removal of regulatory barriers, telemedicine application is facing
with major difficulties in developing countries. Lack of expertise and training opportunities on telemedicine has become
one of the major obstacles for the deployment of telemedicine in developing countries. The Vice-Rapporteur of Q-14/2,
Dr. Isao Nakajima proposed an E-health Expert Training Course hosted by Tokai University Institute of Medical Sciences.
This proposal was adopted unanimously at ITU-D SG-2. It is the first attempt in the world to offer the specialized training
course on telemedicine and e-health for healthcare workers from developing countries.
After opening of this program on February 7, 2001, researchers from Indonesia, Haiti, China and Bhutan have taken part
in the ITU Telemedicine Expert Training Course. At the current stage, the training course will offer the following two programs:
- Post-doctoral training program offers a research study for 6 - 12 months.
- Short-term training program offers an extensive course work for about 2 weeks.
Tokai University Institute of Medical Sciences is the only member of the ITU Development Sector representing the medical
and healthcare community. Its activities can be found at the URL: http://www.tsj.gr.jp. Current status and outline of
this program including its benefits will be briefly discussed in this presentation.
