Few people take a phone call, send an e-mail or browse the Internet and imagine the hundreds of standards that have facilitated their communication.

Standards are taken for granted. But, a world without standards is hard to imagine.

The engineers that thrash out the technical standards at ITU-T meetings are the unsung heroes of the ICT world. Standards light up the optical fibre feeding the information and knowledge society. They underpin so many services and technologies in our society that their importance cannot be overstated.

I believe passionately that standards make a difference. And I am very proud of my position as Director of the telecoms/ICT standards making arm of ITU.
