Question 9/11 – Monitoring parameters for NGN protocols
(New Question)

Motivation

The NGN is making the transition from concept to practical implementation. Many operators have already implemented substantial NGN segments.

As the experience of digital network operation showed, one of the most important system functions was the monitoring of SS7 parameters. Rec. Q.752 is used by operators worldwide for monitoring the digital network.

The problem today is to monitor NGN segments and NGN interworking with existing networks. The NGN monitoring system would be based on the evolution of the principles behind the monitoring of SS7. The monitoring of signalling in mixed packet/digital public telecommunication networks could be the main authentic information source for operations dealing with this network and its elements as well as QoS.

Standardization of the NGN monitoring system parameters will give operators and Administrations monitoring information that is compatible and comparable across network segments. Moreover, it could be useful to help resolve points of disagreement.

SG11 developed a Recommendation providing the conceptual basis for monitoring parameters for NGN protocols during the 2005-2008 Study Period. In the 2009-2012 Study Period concrete Recommendations for monitoring parameters should be done for:

  • SIP protocol monitoring subsystem;
  • H.248 protocol monitoring subsystem;
  • voice (transfer) service level monitoring subsystem;
  • streaming video service level monitoring subsystem;
  • Service Level Agreements performance monitoring subsystem;
  • IP information flows monitoring subsystem (RTP/RTCP protocols level);
  • application server monitoring subsystem;
  • hardware faults and reconfiguring procedures monitoring subsystem.

Question

Study items to be considered include, but are not limited to:

  • What is the parameter set for a SIP protocol monitoring subsystem?
  • What is the parameter set for a H.248 protocol monitoring subsystem?
  • What is the parameter set for a voice (transfer) service level monitoring subsystem?
  • What is the parameter set for a streaming video service level monitoring subsystem?
  • What is the parameter set for a Service Level Agreements performance monitoring subsystem?
  • What is the parameter set for an IP information flow monitoring subsystem (RTP/RTCP protocols level)?
  • What is the parameter set for an application server monitoring subsystem?
  • What is the parameter set for a hardware faults and reconfiguring procedures monitoring subsystem?

Tasks

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of a SIP protocol monitoring subsystem parameter set and methodology for its measurement.
  • Development of an H.248 protocol monitoring subsystem parameter set and methodology for its measurement.
  • Development of a voice (transfer) service level monitoring subsystem parameter set and methodology for its measurement.
  • Development of a streaming video service level monitoring subsystem parameter set and methodology for its measurement.
  • Development of a Service Level Agreements performance monitoring subsystem parameter set and methodology for its measurement.
  • Development of a service level IP information flows monitoring subsystem parameter set and methodology for its measurement.
  • Development of a service level application server monitoring subsystem parameter set and methodology for its measurement.
  • Development of a service level hardware faults and reconfiguring procedures monitoring subsystem parameter set and methodology for its measurement.
