随着电信基础设施的小型化即小型管道和小型电缆,已经有可能运用影响较小的挖沟技术在一天中以更少侵占时间和空间的方式、使用比以前挖沟技术更小的工地来完成网络建设的所有步骤。ITU-T L.83建议书描述了这种挖沟技术,该技术能够便于在窄沟中安装地下光缆、在管道或小型管道中安装小型电缆或者直埋电缆。这种类型的窄沟使得能够在小型道路上,典型的城市中的那些道路上,使用缩小了尺寸的机械,并产生较少数量的材料浪费,因此应该用于城市地区。这项技术的主要特点是吸泥机和挖掘锯可以同时工作,使得有可能在同一天开始和关闭工地。
