Bridging the Standardization Gap
What is the standardization gap?
The standardization gap can be defined as disparities in the ability of developing countries*, relative to developed ones, to access, implement, contribute to and influence international ICT standards, specifically ITU Recommendations.

For case studies, best practices, statistics and analysis of the GAP, see the newly-issued ITU-T Research Report on Bridging the Standardization Gap (December 2009) [ ]
 What actions are being taken?
The Action Plan in Resolution 44 of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA 2008, Johannesburg) outlines four major programmes for developing countries:

  • Strengthening standard-making capabilities
  • Assisting developing countries in enhancing efforts in respect of standards application
  • Human resource building
  • Flagship groups for bridging the standardization gap

 Bridging the Standardization Gap Fund
The Bridging the Standardization Gap Fund has been created to finance the four work programmes, i.e.

  • To facilitate the participation of developing countries in the standards development process
  • To allow them to profit from access to new technology development
  • To ensure that their requirements are taken into account in the development of standards
Your contributions will be used for workshops and meetings in developing countries, fellowships, surveys and study programmes.
