2G / 3G / 4G ...

There has been much market positioning by manufacturers and operators around which radio access technology is which generation. While there is general consensus that analog systems are first generation, and TDMA systems are second generation, it becomes much less clear what constitutes third generation or beyond.

The following figure[1] illustrates this point. (It should be noted that what is labelled 3.5 G or 3.9 G is the view of the source of the diagram and is not an agreed ITU perspective.)

The current work on LTE and LTE-Advanced is generally considered 4G.
