About Development Sector Projects
The ITU-D has longstanding years of experience in the execution and implementation of projects in ICT for
Development. The types of small, medium and large-scale projects undertaken include telecommunication infrastructure development, capacity
building, policies and regulation, e-services, cybersecurity, emergency telecommunications, ICTs for persons with disabilities, etc.
By having in-house expertise in project development, management and monitoring & evaluation, the ITU is
well positioned to deliver ICT for Development projects to help achieve
the World
Summit on the Information Society Goals as well as the
Millennium Development Goals.
The ITU is open to collaborating
with stakeholders and funding
partners to deliver ICT projects
that address socio-economic
development needs. To facilitate the
development of projects, the ITU
Project Document Template
and a
Study
Paper on Best Practices and Lessons
Learned in Project Management
are available for use.
During the fifth
World Telecommunication Development
Conference (WTDC-10) of the ITU,
each region grouped its initiatives
and selected the top projects that
best met its particular priorities.
The following 28 Regional
Initiatives based on
WTDC-10
Resolution 17 (Rev.
Hyderabad, 2010) were adopted
to be implemented during this
four-year period:

- Development of a broadband infrastructure and achievement of regional interconnectivity and universal access

- Establishment of an ITU virtual laboratory for the remote testing of equipment and of new technologies and services, in the nterests of achieving the aims of Resolution 76 (Johannesburg, 2008) of WTSA-08 and populating a unified ITU database
- Provision of a stable electric power supply for telecommunication/ICT facilities in rural and remote areas
- Development of recommendations and creation of a pilot segment of a telecommunication/ICT system to support secure remote retail payments and the management of bank accounts using wireless communication networks.
