ITU/BDT, in association with UNITAR and the Observatory for the Sahel and the Sahara (OSS), organized on 15-16 October 2001 an Institutional Meeting, with the participation of the African countries ministerial departments in charge of telecommunications and environment, all concerned regional African Organizations/Institutions and world potential partners for the official launch of the second phase of the Programme for an Information System on Desertification (ISD) - Environmental Information Circulation and Monitoring System on the Internet (EISI) in Africa.

 

The first phase already implemented has permitted to organize sub-regional training seminars and implement pilot projects in seven African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Morocco, Uganda, Senegal, Tunisia) and three regions (West Africa, North Africa and East Africa). The second phase aims at extending the field of application of the Environmental Information Circulation and Monitoring System on the Internet to all the African continent, in order to respond to the numerous request of African countries and sub-regions wishing to equip themselves with capabilities to build their own ISD-EISI.

 

a) Sub-Regional Training Seminars on the development and use of telecommunication and information technology for protection of the environment and sustainable development: First Phase

 

  •   Sub-Regional Training Seminar for the benefit of the East Africa Region (Djibouti, 13-15 March 2000)

 

Hosted by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the workshop was attended by 29 experts representing 10 countries of the region and several Regional or International Organizations.

 

  • Sub-Regional Training Seminar for the benefit of the West Africa Region (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, 28-30 April 2000)

 

Hosted by the Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), the workshop was attended by 36 experts representing 11 countries of the region and several Regional or International Organizations.

 

  • Sub-Regional Training Seminar for the benefit of the North Africa Region (Algiers; Algeria, 27-31 January 2001)

 

Hosted by the Direction Générale des Forêts du Ministère algérien de l’Agriculture and the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), the workshop was attended by 14 experts representing 4 countries of the region and several Regional or International Organizations.

 

b) Information System on Desertification (SID) – Environmental Information Circulation and Monitoring System on the Internet (SISEI): Second Phase

 

  • Technical Meeting (Geneva, Switzerland, 16 March 2001)

 

Aim: Presentation of the results of the first phase of SID-SISEI programme, discussions and setting of the general lines of the second phase, promotion of the association of new partners to the implementation of the second phase.

 

Hosted by the ITU, the meeting was attended by 16 experts representing potential partners and Regional or International Organizations.

 

  • Institutional Meeting (Geneva, Switzerland, 15-16 October 2001)

 

Aim: Group together the interested ministerial departments of each African countries as well as all concerned regional African Organizations/Institutions and world potential partners for the official launch of the second phase.

 

Hosted by the ITU, the meeting was attended by 37 experts representing 15 African countries and 14 potential partners and Regional or International Organizations.
