The Global Information and Communication Technology Sustainability Initiative,  entitled "Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI)" has been officially launched by Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Service Providers and Suppliers with the support of UNEP and ITU. The ceremony took place at Torino, Italy on June 5th during the celebration of the 2001 Environment Day.

The ICT industry, through GeSI aims to help improve global environment and to enhance human and economic development and thereby make a key contribution to a global sustainable future, through raising awareness of contribution and impact of information and communications technologies.
