WTDC’06 identified five regional initiatives for the Asia Pacific region, which include Telecommunication/ICT Policy and Regulatory Cooperation in the Asia Pacific Region, Rural Communications – Infrastructure Development, NGN Planning, Unique Telecommunication/ICT needs of Pacific Islands and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Asia-Pacific region and Strengthening the collaboration between ITU-T and ITU-D. As the countries in the ASP region embrace competition, adopt new technologies and services, there are new requirements in the region (e.g. Issues pertaining to NGN and Cybersecurity) to address the issues arising therein in addition to continued assistance on existing regulatory issues that emerging regulators are faced with. On a sub regional basis, the Pacific Island countries are faced with unique needs such as regulatory expertise requirement, assistances in enacting / implementing laws pertaining to competition, building emergency communication facilities as well as providing support through rural communication facilities.
