Private Sector

ITU-D recognizes the important role of the private sector in expanding ICT development in all regions of the world. There are many industry partners who work with ITU to implement important projects. These public-private partnerships yield innovative solutions, demonstrating that new technologies, sound business models and private sector expertise and financial capacities can make a major contribution towards global development goals.

A Working Group on Private Sector issues (WGPS) has been established to make proposals to the Telecommunication Development Advisory Board (TDAG) that advise the ITU-D Director on major issues.

Five Regional Working Parties (RWP) have been created, one for each ITU region, to deal specifically with private sector/industry issues of relevance in each region. These RWPs are open to all ICT/telecom market players in the region, but chairmanship, vice-chairmanship and rapporteur positions can only be filled by ITU-D Sector Members -- see how you can become a Sector Member.  Upcoming global and regional meetings of WGPS, the TDAG Working Group (Geneva, 4-5 February 2008). An excellent opportunity for private sector participation is the Global Industry Leaders' Forum (GILF). This unique forum addresses legislative/regulatory issues that prevent or slow down ICT/Telecom access for low income populations and telecommunication investment in developing countries.

The 3rd annual Global Industry Leaders Forum (GILF-10) organized by the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of ITU will be held from 9-10 November 2009 Dakar, Senegal. This forum will take place just prior to the Global Symposium of Regulators (10 - 12 November 2010). More information will be available shortly. [See what happened at GILF-09...]

"Being a Member of the ITU Development Sector has enabled us to bridge the gap between our young company and the local regulatory authority which is also less than five years old. Goal congruence in terms of achieving better and cheaper telecommunications for all Zimbabweans has been made easier since the Sector eliminates unnecessary factors in design elements and operations"
