Mr. Hwang, the former President of Samsung Electronics' semiconductor business, is not only a representative entrepreneur in Korea but also a globally acclaimed expert in semiconductor technology. He holds a PhD degree from University of Massachusetts and currently has been a chair professor of SungKyunKwan and a director of R & D Strategy at Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
Mr. Hwang received the highest evaluation for his abilities in vision setting and execution as well as his global mindset, which were essential in establishing KT's future strategy and management innovation. He was considered as the best qualified candidate as an IT specialist with an ability to create new businesses. In addition to his corporate backgrounds, Mr. Hwang also served as the nation's CTO by heading R&D Planning Office of the Ministry of Knowledge and Economy.
Mr. Hwang is expected to lead KT in overcoming current obstacles and to place KT back on track, eventually enhancing KT's long-term corporate value. Also, he will play significant role in reconciling numerous organizations associated with the company such as the government bodies and competitors.
The candidate is subject to final approval by the shareholders through an Extraordinary General Shareholder Meeting in January 2014 to be officially appointed as CEO, following which, an employment contract will be signed with the CEO Recommendation Committee. With the nomination of the CEO candidate, KT expects to expedite management restoration, to process all pending issues promptly.
