Mobily became the Kingdom’s monopoly-breaking mobile operator when it won a tender against five consortiums in the summer of 2004, paying SAR 12.964 billion for its GSM and 3G licenses, and in December listing on Tadawul. In 2007, Mobily acquired Bayanat for SAR 1.5 billion and Zajil in 2008. It was the first operator to launch MMS, high volume mobile broadband bundles, the BlackBerry platform, the iPhone. It has a partnership the prestigious Saudi football club, Al Hilal, and the company was the first Arab business to receive the Dale Carnegie Leadership Award. Today, the company has the largest 3.75G high speed packet access (HSPA) network and active mobile broadband subscriber base in the Middle East and North Africa region. As of YE2008, principal shareholders are the UAE’s Etisalat, owning 27.4%, and GOSI which has 11.2%.
