Regional African Satellite Communications Organization

The Regional African Satellite Communications Organisation (RASCOM) is an intergovernmental satellite communications organization created through the desired political will and commitment of all African governments to pool their resources together to provide a continent-wide telecommunications infrastructure using a dedicated Pan-African satellite system, covering the entire continent and providing information and communications services, especially in isolated and rural areas in Africa. Its headquarters is in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire and it has a membership of 45 African countries. African Telecommunications operators in member states are signatories to the operating agreement. It launched its first Pan African satellite on the 21st of December 2007. The commercial operations started in August 2008 and customers will seamlessly be migrated to the replacement satellite to be launched between July and September 2010. RASCOM mission is to launch a series of satellites. In this vein it will always count on the full cooperation of all member states of the ITU for the coordination of more spectrum/orbital resources for the launch of more of its satellites. The RASCOM satellites are being technically and commercially run by the Pan African Satellite Operator, RascomStar-QAF.
