Pakistanís Universal Service Fund (USF) has announced that it has signed deals for two new projects. Firstly, it reported that it had inked a memorandum of understanding with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Wateen Telecom for the latter to install 900km of fibre-optic cable in Balochistan in a deal worth PKR374 million (USD4.6 million). The project will bring fibre connectivity to five unserved administrative divisions in the province, covering around 335,000 people.
The second announced venture will see incumbent Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) provide basic voice and data services in the unserved districts of Larkan and Shikarpur, in the Sindh province. The USF will provide PTCL with PKR228 million to carry out the work, and it is expected that up to 165,000 people stand to benefit from development.
