Global Forum on Effective Use of Telecommunications/ICT for Disaster Management: Saving Lives, Geneva
International Conference Center (CICG), Geneva, Switzerland 10 -12 December 2007 |
|
|
The purpose of this event is to bring together the main stakeholders active in developing, deploying and using telecommunications/ICT for disaster mitigation, and to serve as a forum in which they can map out concrete strategies and adopt practical measures aimed at giving telecommunications/ICT a central role in disaster management, i.e. early warning, preparedness, relief and response. The discussions will focus on policy, regulation, technology, finance and the deployment of last-mile communications systems. The debate will take a multi-hazard approach, as the role of telecommunications/ICT remains the same irrespective of the nature or type of disaster at hand. Attention will also be focused on the ways in which last-mile solutions can be integrated into existing and future early warning systems. For this, cooperation among organizations involved in disaster prevention and management is an essential element.
Dates: 10 December (Monday) – 12 December (Wednesday) 2007
Venue: Geneva International Conference Centre (CICG), Geneva, Switzerland

Workshop on the Role of Telecommunications/ICT in
Disaster Mitigation, 28 March 2007. Badung, Indonesia. |
|
|
This workshop contributes to the work of the ITU-D Study
Group Question 22/2 (Utilization of ICT for disaster
management, resources, and active and passive space-based
sensing systems as they apply to disaster and emergency
relief situation), and to the implementation of
Resolution 34 (The role of telecommunications/ICT in
early warning and mitigation of disasters and humanitarian
assistance), adopted by the World Telecommunications
Development Conference that was held in Doha (March, 2006).
The adoption of Resolution 34 and Question 22/2
followed a series of natural disasters such as the December
2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake that triggered a series of
devastating tsunamis, and the India-Pakistan border
earthquake of October 2005 that caused untold suffering for
the populations affected and also disrupted economic and
social activities. In recent months a number of natural
disasters have been experienced by a number of other
countries including Indonesia that has been affected by
earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions. It is hoped
that this event will contribute to the knowledge base of
disaster mitigation by bringing together experts to map
practical strategies.
