The
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), requested assistance
from the BDT ECDC to provide basic e-commerce training to senior
level managers from PTA, Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation
Limited (PTC) and representatives from Internet Service Providers
(ISPs).
With
the close collaboration of the ITU Area Office for Asia, a training
workshop was organized for the telecommunication sector of Pakistan
on the basic of e-commerce in Islamabad from 30th March to 3rd of
April 2001. Between 6-18 persons attended the workshop that was
inaugurated by the Secretary for Communications and the Chairperson
of the PTA.
The
goal of the training was to provide a forum for the exchange of
ideas on e-commerce, to introduce the basic concepts of e-commerce,
to explain the technology policy issues and appropriate strategies,
to highlight the need for a legal environment for e-commerce and to
provide policy guidance in creating an environment conducive to the
development of e-commerce in Pakistan. ITU/BDT activities and its
role in assisting developing countries to bridge the digital divide
within the framework of the EC-DC initiative and other relevant
activities were explained. Recommendations were proposed on how some
of these challenges could be addressed. Live demonstrations on
secure e-transactions including digital certificates, encryption
technologies, digital signatures and strong end-user authentication
using Rainbow tokens were done.
The
ECDC unit prepared the agenda based on the objectives defined by the
PTA and within the framework BDT activities and mandate as outlined
in the VAP. The preparation also included the entire content for the
duration of the workshop.
