Arab Innovation Exchange Network Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, State of Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen 2012-2014 In a global, knowledge-based economy, organizations cannot innovate by themselves only; they need to connect actively with new technologies, new products, new insights and new opportunities for growth from external sources, and across boundaries. The Innovation exchange network will employ a model which combines technology, people, and process in delivering new business opportunities based on organizations’ strategic needs. 2 main components need to be developed to establish the network: Intermediaries: those Intermediaries are a team of creative, technically skilled, and PhD or Masters qualified professionals, trained to seek collaborative opportunities across diverse fields of industry. They will be embedded into organizations to understand its technology or other capabilities, and strategic intents that require external collaboration. This will identify gaps and opportunities that are aligned to the organization goals. An On-line Secure storage of information: that will allow Intermediaries in the Arab region to collaborate and identify areas of collaboration among Arab countries. the Intermediaries will collaborate within the Innovation exchange network, sharing information, researching and analyzing technology, gathering market intelligence and searching for opportunities for business connections. Such connections can be established to improve internal efficiency or to open new doors and opportunities externally. Once a connection is identified, Intermediaries will assist the organization to directly engage with the other party using an appropriate step-wise disclosure process. It is also suggested to organize a regional conference on yearly bases to increase foster innovation and collaboration among Arab counties based on the opportunities and challenges identified by the Intermediaries throughout the year.
ARAB INNOVATION LABS NETWORK Region : Arab States 2012-2015 This project will facilitate the creation of a Network of Arab Innovation Labs. The Innovation Labs will focus on developing innovative social development-oriented applications to address identified local development challenges and needs with a special emphasis on using the mobile channel and interfaces. The lab will provide incubation support to develop and deploy between 5-10 applications/year to constitute a package of “Apps4D”. The Labs will work with entrepreneurs not only to develop innovative applications, but also to ensure that solutions have sound business models.
Center of Excellence in ICT Djibouti, Mauritania, Somalia, Yemen 2012-2015 The Earth Institute will support the creation of a new ICT Center for Excellence for Sustainable Development, to train advanced specialists in ICT, including engineers, systems managers, and ICT-capable development leaders to build new tools for sustainable development. The role of the Center of ICT Excellence would be to take the lead on helping to synthesize best solutions/approaches and field/deploy test these solutions.
Cloud-computing platform for communes   2012-2014 This project is based on cloud computing technology for communes and generalization of Cloud of government approach in a second step. -This project will provide IaaS, PaaS and SaaS services to communes
Community-led Development with ICT Djibouti, Mauritania, Somalia, Yemen 2012-2015 This project aims to enable and enhance community-led development efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by harnessing cutting-edge ICT technologies in Arab countries. To achieve this objective, The Earth Institute, shall jointly with Arab state governments develop and implement ICT tools for development in some of the least developed Arab countries. This project will initially be implemented in Djibouti and will leverage the experiences and successes of the Millennium Villages Project (MVP). The experiences in Djibouti will be a powerful demonstration of the critical role of ICT in achieving the MDGs, and will subsequently be replicated and scaled up in other parts of the Arab world.
Connect To Learn in the Arab World (CTLAW) Djibouti 2012-2015 This proposal how Connect To Learn would enable and enhance access to quality education in the Arab World by enabling information and communications technology (ICT). The project will serve a powerful demonstration of the role ICT can play in reaching the MDG 2 (achieve universal primary education) and access to secondary education in resource poor settings focusing on gender parity.
Developing a Policy toolkit for addressing the rise of Cloud Computing in the Arab region Region : Arab States 2012-2015 Cloud Computing is certainly one of the major technology trends we are experiencing these days; it is considered by many to be as transformational as the rise of the Internet and the Web. The USA, Europe, China, to cite just a few, have developed or are developing Cloud Computing strategies, including policies to unleash the power of Cloud Computing and leverage the promise to create new job opportunities, develop the ICT sector, our SMEs, and the Government. The purpose of the proposed project is to develop - a research paper that studies the impact of Cloud Computing on the Arab region, considering both the challenges in terms of policies, skills, … as well as opportunities for Innovation, job creation, economic development, ICT readiness, E-Govt Readiness, … -a policy toolkit that will provide a consistent and coherent framework for the Arab Countries to develop local policies that will both support National Priorities and unleash the power of the Cloud Convergence’ .
Digital Broadcasting Switchover & Mobile TV introduction in the Arab Region Region : Arab States 2012-2014 Digital broadcasting switchover : In few years television services in all developed countries will go completely digital, the old analogue television signal will be switched off and viewers will need to convert or upgrade their TV equipment to receive digital signals, whether through their aerial, by satellite, cable or broadband. The main objective of this part of the project is to set up a master plan for “Broadcasting Digital Switchover” that will enable Arab countries to decide whether, how and when to proceed to digital switchover, replacing analogue television and radio in the Arab region by digital transmission and to help for a smooth Digital TV and Radio switchover. Mobile TV : The objective of this component of the project is to study the potential of mobile television in the Arab region, increase the awareness of key policy-makers on the potential of mobile television, and to provide advice on the key technical, policy and regulatory requirements to be put in place by countries in the Arab region to develop both mobile television and mobile radio.
e-Government for Arab States Region Region : Arab States -2016 The main goal of the project is to assist Arab States Region by implementing secure e-Government services and applications to further assist countries in providing efficient public services delivery while improving the lives of citizens and to facilitate secure inter-government operations.
El Hassan Eco Tech Park Program Jordan 2012-2013 Abstract In 2010, the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) launched an initiative to establish in collaboration with Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), El Hassan Eco-Tech Park located in Ein Ghazal in the East part of Amman. The Park will be utilized as an active science labs for youth and the general public for demonstrating for clean technologies in Water, Energy and Environment; Learning by doing Museum, R&D center for eco-friendly technologies, Capacity building in science, technology and innovation and local knowledge in sustainability development. The Royal Scientific Society (RSS) vision is to be the local and regional reference point and knowledge leader for science and technology using scientific and engineering research to power economic development and social progress. RSS mission is to and build and strengthen scientific and engineering research in the areas of greatest strategic value to Jordan’s long-term competitiveness and development. The overall objective of establishing El Hassan Eco-Tech Park is to contribute to the national and regional efforts in advancing environmental and social sustainability through the awareness raising and the adoption of clean technologies and sound environmental practices. The specific objectives are to provide a forum for experimenting and demonstrating new customized clean technologies; to advance applied environmental research for problem solving and addressing proactively new emerging issues for Jordan and the region; to provide hands-on training for the future eco-leaders and professionals; and to provide an eco-friendly recreational facility. Thus the Park will be a place where eco-technologies are developed and exhibited; a place for applied research and education on eco–management; a think tank for specialized services on integrated resources management; and a place for exploring renewable energy technologies.
Establishment of a network to support open-source software Region : Arab States 2012-2014 The main objective of the Project is to provide to the Arab States Region a sustainable well-managed platform to enable the ICT society to know, obtain and utilize open-source software as a main tool for development.
ICT 2.0 - Sector Development and Competitiveness Engine Jordan 2012-2015 Starting with the REACH initiative in 1999, the ICT Sector in Jordan has been developing as a major economic growth engine for the country with approximately 14% contribution to the GDP and more than 80,000 jobs in total employment. The ICT Sector is leading Jordan’s transformation into knowledge-based economy and society. Similar to other industries affected by the late financial crisis, and recently with the regional instability, that has slowed down the growth of our companies, ICT is still seen as a major driver to accelerate economic growth. Accordingly, four main pillars were identified as major enablers and triggers for sector growth and development that need to be framed under one program to run over 3 years to assist in boosting the sector development, reposition our industry as the regional hub and leader in ICT, stabilize and enable the growth and sustainability of our companies in the near future, and assist preparing them to face other challenges and effectively seize new opportunities. The four pillars upon which this concept is being formulated include a fundamental element for our sector’s growth; Human Resources, aiming at creating a reliable and sustainable pool of resources that will enhance employment rates, and will maintain the Jordanian resources’ edge known for their unique technical capabilities. Another pillar is Export Development, aiming at increasing regional markets penetration, enhancing our companies/ products positioning & visibility, and enabling sector scalability. In addition, developing Sector IP & Innovation through the diffusion of ICT in other industries to create an edge in our sector offerings, and to cover regional gaps in certain areas that will create niches lead by Jordanian ICT companies, and through capturing existing IP & products to be properly packaged for commercialization, which will surely pour into the core of export development and Investments Attraction; as the fourth pillar under the transformational program being discussed herein. Investment Attraction is seen as a main financing channel that will contribute to raising our existing companies’ maturity, exposure, and readiness to compete regionally and internationally. All components mentioned herein have a lot of intersection and all share the requirements and need for assessing market readiness and potential, building sector capacity, raising awareness, Marketing and PR, providing guidelines and consultancy services, and mainly setting certain work standards on sector level to raise maturity, ensure quality and sustainability. The propositions provided hereunder each pillar shall assist in meeting the following objectives: 1. Ensure the availability of a solid echo-system that builds sustainable, ready, qualified and mature companies able to compete regionally and internationally 2. Boost our local industry and develop sector competitiveness and edge 3. Promote and highlight successes as a way to promote the industry 4. Brand sector as the region operations and implementation center; home of innovation and IP 5. Better promote our human capacity and minds
ITU and Linux Professional Institute Training Initiative Region : Arab States 2012-2013 The introduction of Linux courses and the widely recognized industry certification will greatly enhance the training offerings of the ITC and the services they can offer the Member countries. This collaboration and support of open source software, in keeping with the WSIS outcomes as well as the WTDC resolutions (Res 17 Annex 3), enhances the employability of the graduates thus helping promote one of the objectives of the ITC Initiative – that of technological empowerment as a path to economic and social development. The Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC) program is designed to certify the competency of IT professionals using the Linux operating system and its associated tools. It is designed to be distribution neutral, following the Linux Standard Base and other relevant standards and conventions.
IXP in Djibouti: keeping regional Internet traffic regionally through Djibouti. Djibouti 2012-2013 The project is not a new one, but part of the InternetExchange Points (IXPs): keeping local Internet traffic local. Its only presents the overview on how Djibouti wants to position its IXP toward the Arab League. This document focuses on presenting the significance of an IXP in Djibouti, in order to develop peering activities with and between the Middle East and East Africa networks. Peering actions through a well-built IXP and its related data-center activities will democratize Internet access … The project aims to enable and enhance community-led development efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by harnessing cutting-edge ICT technologies.
LOW-COST COMPUTING DEVICES AND E-EDUCATIONAL CONTENT FOR ARAB SCHOOLS Region : Arab States 2012-2015 The project aims at use of ICT in education through introducing low-cost tablets for students/teachers in schools in pilot Arab countries. Several low-cost tablets are currently available in the market providing the potential to revolutionize the use of educational computing in schools. The use of low-cost, Open Source tablets make content development easier and facilitate the distribution of free and paid educational content.
Managing Agriculture Knowledge Through Localized Community Expert System Region : Arab States 2012-2014 In the past few years, a sharp rise in food prices and agriculture commodity generated severe concerns about food security. Arab countries are less exposed to reach food safety nets due to their increased population growth, their low agriculture productivity, and their dependence on the global markets. Arab countries need to act urgently to improve food security. In this context, Many studies recommended increasing farmers agricultural knowledge, transferring the recent researches and experiences from experts to framers will have a great impact on maximizing productivity, decreasing costs, and enhancing their livelihoods. This project aims to provide Arab farmers with a high level of knowledge sharing and management systems. This is done through enabling rational know-how experiences and expertise whenever needed in order to innovatively strengthen the Arab food safety nets and improve rural livelihoods in the Arab region.

The Arab Civilization Virtual Museum Region : Arab States 2012-2016 The Arab civilization Virtual Museum (AVM) is a Virtual Reality (VR) application that enables the virtual visit experience to the most important Islamic Heritage in the Arab world. The application will be delivered using state-of-the-art technologies in VR field like 3D Projection, Holograms and Natural Interaction. The AVM will be physically available in all participating Arab countries-in different forms of setups- and also through the Internet making it easy for all the Arab population to learn about their civilization contribution to the human race.
The Arab e-Market for Handicrafts and Heritage Region : Arab States - - This e-Market is a web & mobile-based platform that allows craft makers in deprived and marginalized communities to connect with a international marketplace of socially-conscious buyers. - Each shop owner must choose a social responsibility (example, donate with 10% of his/her sales for social cause ‘buy 50 books for students in local school’) - If the craft makers lack the needed technological infrastructure, the project will partner them with social entrepreneurs in their areas. - The project will formulate formal network of representative in some Arab countries to manage the e-market, social responsibilities, and advertising in the local, regional and international level.
The Arab ICT Innovation Award for SMEs Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Sudan, State of Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen 2012-2012 The award will recognize Arab innovations developed by Arab small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Such innovations should go beyond marginal improvements in existing products and services, and have a real added value to their target customers, as well as have a social or economic impact. The innovation could be product, service, business model or process innovation. The purpose of this award is to create a culture that celebrates innovation and recognizes key achievements. The award is rewarded in 2 levels. National Level where each Arab country participating in this award is executing a competition on its county level, then top 3 winners on each county are participating in the finals on the Arab region level. The award will raise awareness of ICT and its positive benefits for the Arab countries. Although a small cash prize may be appropriate, the real benefit for recipients is positive publicity and recognition of their efforts. It would also raise awareness of what ICT does the type of people that are involved in entrepreneurship, and potentially create role models that people entering the workforce may aspire to emulate. Awards can be a money prize for each winning company. In addition to a Cup to be handled in a celebrating ceremony covered by media channels, a short movie can be developed for each winning company for promoting its successful innovation experience. Also the employee who was the key driver behind the innovation can be awarded finally the innovation responsible team can be awarded recognition medals.
