Arab Network for Free Software and Open Sources

In the framework of implementing the outcomes of the World Telecommunications Development Conference that was held in Hyderabad in 2010, in specific the adopted Arab Regional Initiative on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), and in light of the regional project submitted by the ITU Arab Regional Office (ITU-ARO) to the Connect Arab Summit in Doha in 2012 to establish a regional network for FOSS, the ITU-ARO in cooperation with the interested stakeholders is currently taking steps to establish this network.  This network is envisaged to support FOSS activities throughout the region and to further promote the developmental returns resulting from the use of FOSS.  The vision for this network is for it to be an online platform that facilitates exchange of FOSS, and collaboration in areas such as capacity building, research and projects.

In the first phase of the establishment of the network a steering committee will be formed along with an Advisory Board and four working groups:

 1) working group on the cooperation agreement

 2) working group on the website

 3) working group on marketing the network

 4) working group to raise funds for the network.

This first phase will end in the WTDC 2014 in Sharm el-Sheikh where the network will be officially launched.

The network is currently governed by the interested Member States (governments) through the steering committee.  All other interested stakeholders are invited to participate in the activities of the Advisory Board (if they are appointed by the steering committee) and Working Groups.
