ITU Telecom
Asia 2000 will be held in Hong Kong, China, from 4 to 9 December. The event will take
place in the brand new Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, which is ideally
located and offers advanced exhibition and forum facilities. Here are the key reasons why
you need to be there:
- Asia 2000 is the only telecoms event being hosted
by the Government of the Peoples Republic of China in the year 2000.
- Asia 2000 is the only telecoms event that attracts
both industry and government.
- The Asia Pacific region is one of the greatest
investment opportunities for anyone in the telecoms business. And Asia 2000 is the only
telecoms event being held this year that is regional, not local.
- Asia 2000 is your chance to exhibit at the only
event in the region which is combined with a Forum. The ITU Telecom Forum is the only
place in the world where so many people ranked so highly in their respective companies or
governments can meet one another under one roof to shape the future of the telecoms
industry. CEOs, government ministers, policy makers, regulators, financiers and technical
specialists will use the Forum at Asia 2000 to define what is possible and what must be
done in real terms to achieve it.
- With a population of over 3.5 billion, the
Asia-Pacific region constitutes the world's largest single market for telecommunications
products and services. The regional average telephone density at the end of 1998 was just
6.6 per hundred people against a world average of 13.4, but the Asia-Pacific region is now
recovering fast after 1998s recession, and several economies of the region continue
to be the fastest growing in the world today. China itself is not just one of the biggest
telecoms markets in the world today, but also one of the fastest growing by the end
of 1999 the country had more than 43 million mobile cellular subscribers in the world,
ranking it third, behind only the USA and Japan. By the time the Asia 2000 event takes
place in December China is forecast to have overtaken Japan to become the worlds
second largest mobile cellular marketplace, with over 70 million subscribers, and is
expected to overtake the USA for the number one position within five years. China is also
investing huge amounts in Internet network infrastructure, and plans to have an
educational network connecting a thousand universities to the Internet in place by the end
of this year.
- Hong Kong, China, promises to be an excellent venue
for the Asia 2000 event, with a communications and transport infrastructure which reflects
its importance as a business hub for the region.
