Participants profile of Africa 2001
REGION OF OPPORTUNITY
Africa, where the potential for growth abounds, was the first region of the world where the number of mobile phones overtook the number of fixed-line telephones, and it continues to lead the way. In the period between ITU
TELECOM AFRICA 2001 and ITU TELECOM AFRICA 2004, mobile subscribers in the region have more than doubled.

The rise of independent regulatory agencies in the region makes Africa a more stable and predictable place to do
business. Egypt itself represents a crossroads of cultures and regions - the proximity of Egypt to the Middle East makes it an ideal location from which to understand the opportunities arising from the rebuilding of Iraq and developments in other parts of the Gulf region.
